Philippians 1:21-23 (KJV) (21) For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. (22) But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not. (23) For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:
Paul’s only desire was to preach Jesus and Him crucified. The longer he lived, the longer he could live for, and preach Jesus Christ. He is saying, if he died, that it would be personal gain, but not for the work of God. Souls being saved, and lives being changed by the message of the sacrifice of Jesus, was the fruit of his labor. Paul went on to say, if he had to make a choice, he is not sure which he would choose. Paul is sharing with us a personal glimpse into his life, showing us where our hearts should be.
